Finishing exercises for U16 players

Finishing is one of the most exciting aspects of football for 15-16 year old players, but it is also one that requires the most methodological attention. U16 players need to work on the shooting gesture, the timing of the shot and decision-making in the goal zone with exercises adapted to their developmental stage. In this article you will find 5 finishing exercises for U16 players, with objective, materials, space, duration and a variation for each one. Exercises designed so your team arrives at the match with the confidence of knowing how to finish moves.

Why work on finishing with U16 players?

At the perfection stage, finishing is one of the objectives that motivates players the most, and also one that requires the most specific technical work. U16 players (15-16 years) are at a stage where the shooting gesture, prior control and orientation before the shot are beginning to have real complexity. From a pedagogical standpoint, finishing at U16 must be worked on with three key principles. First, the technical gesture: instep kick, cross shot and headed finish must be repeated with good technique before increasing situational difficulty. Second, timing: arriving at the finishing zone at the right moment. Third, decision-making: shoot, wall pass or cross? The exercises in this article combine analytical work with real application situations where the player must resolve with decision and technique.

Finishing circuit (4 stations)

ObjectiveFinish attacks. Improve control and wide shot
Players4 teams of 3-8 players each + 1-2 goalkeepers
MaterialsBalls and bibs
SpaceHalf pitch to full pitch
Duration2-4 sets x 4-6 minutes
CategoryFinishing

The drill is a finishing circuit split into 4 stations. There are 4 teams (1 per station) and each team performs a sequence (black, red, blue, white).

Players rotate numerically within each team. At the end of each set, teams rotate stations, so every team passes through all 4 stations.

Focus on the shooting technique.

Variation: reduce the space to increase defensive intensity or add a touch limit to force faster play. You can also add a joker to create numerical superiority and facilitate learning.

ObjectiveFinish attacks, improve crossing and heading, reach finishing zones. Improve control, passing, wall pass, cross and shot
Players2 teams of 6-10 players each + 1-2 goalkeepers
MaterialsBalls and bibs
SpaceHalf pitch to full pitch
Duration2-4 sets x 4-6 minutes
CategoryFinishing

The drill is a chained finishing circuit with numerical rotation as shown in the diagram. There are 2 consecutive actions per team (black and orange). Both finishing sequences are performed consecutively in the order BLACK-ORANGE.

Performed for time; rotation is first within each team then between the two teams (RED-BLUE), so the task is performed from both profiles.

Focus on the crossing and heading technique, the timing of the attacking run, the shooting technique and zone occupation.

Variation: reduce the space to increase defensive intensity or add a touch limit to force faster play. You can also add a joker to create numerical superiority and facilitate learning.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I work on finishing with U16 players?

It is recommended to include at least one finishing exercise in each training session, even if brief (10-15 minutes). U16 players (15-16 years) need a lot of repetition of the technical gesture. If you wait for the match block for them to finish, the actual practice volume will be insufficient.

How do I correct poor shooting technique in U16 players?

The most common errors at U16 are the standing foot too far from the ball, the hip poorly oriented and striking with the toe. The most effective corrections are brief, immediate and specific. Show the correct gesture, ask for one repetition without pressure and then return to the game situation. Avoid long interruptions that cool the group down.

What distinguishes finishing training at U16 from younger age groups?

"At U16 (15-16 years) the finishing drill must maximise pressure and game-realism: finishing with active defenders, shots from distance, 1v1 situations and cross-and-header combinations under time pressure. The technical base is assumed; the focus is on decision-making speed and execution quality under fatigue."
