Possession and rondo exercises for U16 players
Keeping the ball with purpose is one of the hardest skills to develop at the perfection stage. For U16 players (15-16 years), rondos and possession exercises are the perfect tool to work on body positioning, oriented control and decision-making in reduced spaces, without the pressure of the result. In this article you will find 5 possession and rondo exercises for U16 players, with complete structure: objective, players, materials, space, duration and progression. Perfect for the warm-up, tactical block or as a standalone activity.
Why work on possession and rondo with U16 players?
Rondos and possession exercises are the coach's great allies for developing game intelligence. At U16 (15-16 years), these tasks simultaneously work on body positioning, oriented control, first-touch passing and pressing without the ball, all in a format that players love. Three pedagogical principles to bear in mind when working on possession with U16 players. First, the quality of the control determines the quality of the pass: every control must prepare the next action. Second, the organised pressing of the defenders is just as important as the circulation by those with the ball. Third, possession must have an objective (progress, switch play, find the interior pass) to avoid becoming an empty circuit. The exercises in this article range from basic rondos to large-group possession situations with numerical superiority.
Exercises 5
Rondo 8 (pairs) v2 (2 spaces)
| Objective | Progress in attack, maintain possession, improve body positioning, control, passing and offensive relationships |
| Players | 10-20 players (8 attackers vs 2 defenders) |
| Materials | Cones, bibs and balls |
| Space | 1 rectangle divided into 2 squares of 6-9 m per side |
| Duration | 3-6 sets x 2-4 min per set |
| Category | Rondo |
A rondo with 2 spaces where the possessing team consists of 4 pairs wearing different bib colours. The objective is to maintain possession through passes, constant movement and association triangles and then progress via a pass to the players in the other square.
If the attacking team loses the ball they immediately press to win it back; if the defender recovers the ball they make a safe pass and begin attacking.
Attack: focus on pass execution, body positioning to progress and offering passing lines to the ball-carrier. Defense: direct the pressure and close the interior pass.
Variation: reduce the space to increase defensive intensity or add a touch limit to force faster play. You can also add a joker to create numerical superiority and facilitate learning.

Try FutCoach freePossession 3+3v3
| Objective | Maintain possession, improve body positioning, control, passing and offensive relationships. Win the ball back through pressing |
| Players | 9-20 players (3 teams of 3). Can run 2 simultaneous tasks |
| Materials | Cones, discs, 3 sets of bibs and balls |
| Space | 1 square of 12-18 m per side |
| Duration | 3-4 sets x 3-5 min per set |
| Category | Small-sided possession |
A 6v3 possession game is played. The objective for the attacking teams (red and blue) is to maintain possession through passes, constant movement and forming association triangles.
The objective for the defending team (white) is to win the ball back through interception and tackle. When the white team recovers the ball, they join possession with the team that did not lose it (3+3) and the team that lost the ball (3) becomes the new defenders.
Attack: focus on pass execution, offering passing lines to the ball-carrier and maintaining width in attack. Defense: close passing lanes to press and reduce space.
Variation: reduce the space to increase defensive intensity or add a touch limit to force faster play. You can also add a joker to create numerical superiority and facilitate learning.
Possession 3+3v3 (nested rectangles)
| Objective | Maintain possession, improve body positioning, control, passing and offensive relationships. Win the ball back through pressing |
| Players | 9-20 players (3 teams of 3). Can run 2 simultaneous tasks |
| Materials | Cones, discs, 3 sets of bibs and balls |
| Space | 2 rectangles one inside the other: inner 6-12 m per side, outer 12-18 m per side |
| Duration | 3-4 sets x 3-5 min per set |
| Category | Small-sided possession |

Possession 8v8 + 4 jokers
| Objective | Maintain possession, improve body positioning, control, passing and offensive relationships. Win the ball back through pressing |
| Players | 20 players: 2 teams of 8 + 1 joker team of 4 |
| Materials | Cones, discs, bibs and balls |
| Space | 1 large square divided into 4 squares of 6-10 m per side |
| Duration | 3-4 sets x 3-5 min per set |
| Category | Possession |
An 8v8 + 4 joker possession game is played. The objective for the attacking team (red) is to maintain possession through passes, constant movement and forming association triangles. The jokers (white) always support the team in possession.
The objective for the defending team (blue) is to win the ball back through interception and tackle. When they recover, they must find the safe pass and transition to attack. Red immediately presses to win back.
Attack: focus on pass execution, offering passing lines to the ball-carrier and maintaining width. Defense: close passing lanes and press collectively.
Variation: reduce the space to increase defensive intensity or add a touch limit to force faster play. You can also add a joker to create numerical superiority and facilitate learning.

Frequently asked questions
How many players do I need for a rondo with U16 players?
The most basic rondo (3v1 or 4v1) needs just 4-5 players, which makes it ideal for small groups or for warming up while the last players arrive. More complex rondos and large-group possession games need more players and allow work on positional structure and game reading.
Is the rondo only for warming up or does it have real tactical value?
The rondo has enormous tactical value. It simultaneously works on body positioning, oriented control, first-touch passing, pressing without the ball, communication and defensive transition. At U16 it can be used in the warm-up, as the central task of a technical-tactical session or as an activation exercise in the cool-down.
How many touches should I allow in possession exercises with U16 players?
"For U16 (15-16 years), working consistently with 1-2 touch limits is standard. The technical base is assumed; the focus is on speed of decision and execution quality. Only in introductory sessions of a new exercise should you begin without touch restrictions."
